More than 6,500 osteopathic medical school graduates entered the physician workforce in 2018, bringing the total number of DOs in the U.S. to 114,425, according to a recent report by the American Osteopathic Association.
In its 2018 Report on the Osteopathic Medical Profession, the AOA projects DOs will represent more than 20 percent of all practicing physicians by 2030.
Three findings from the report:
1. Sixty-five percent of practicing DOs are age 45 or younger, and 41 percent of all DOs are women.
2. Half of practicing DOs in the U.S. practice in seven states: Pennsylvania, California, Florida, New York, Michigan, Texas and Ohio.
3. Most DOs (57 percent) enter primary care specialties. However, the top five non-primary care specialties DOs typically enter into are emergency medicine, anesthesiology, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, and psychiatry.
