11 health, science books to read this summer

STAT News released its annual health and science summer reading list June 25, featuring 39 book selections, including suggestions from CDC Director Robert Redfield, MD, and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation CEO Susan Desmond-Hellmann, MD.

The books discuss a range of health and science-related topics, including the downfall of blood testing startup Theranos and a former CDC director's life at the organization.

Here are 11 books selected by various health and science experts and compiled by STAT.

1. Dr. Desmond-Hellmann: "Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup" by John Carreyrou

2. Dr. Redfield: "The Great Influenza: The Story of the Deadliest Pandemic in History" by John M. Barry

3. Jerome M. Adams, MD, U.S. Surgeon General: "The Servant: A Simple Story About the True Essence of Leadership" by James C. Hunter

4. Peter J. Hotez, MD, PhD, dean for the National School of Tropical Medicine at Houston-based Baylor College of Medicine: "Women in Science: 50 Fearless Pioneers Who Changed the World" by Rachel Ignotofsky

5. Lisa Suennen, senior managing director for GE Ventures: "Crashing Through: A True Story of Risk, Adventure, and the Man Who Dared to See" by Robert Kurson

6. David Sinclair, PhD, co-director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biological Mechanisms of Aging at Boston-based Harvard Medical School: "Sapiens: A Brief History of Humankind" by Yuval Noah Harari

7. Tom Frieden, MD, former CDC director: "The Fears of the Rich, The Needs of the Poor: My Years at the CDC" by William H. Foege, MD

8. Adm. Brett P. Giroir, MD, HHS Assistant Secretary for Health: "Dreamland: The True Tale of America's Opiate Epidemic" by Sam Quinones

9. Magdalena Skipper, PhD, editor-in-chief of Nature: "The Invention of Nature: Alexander von Humboldt's New World" by Andrea Wulf

10. Nate Butkus, 8-year-old host of "The Show About Science" podcast: "One Tiny Turtle" by Nicola Davies
