10 top secondary income streams for physicians

Thirty-six percent of physicians earned income from an employment source outside their practice in 2023 — up by 2% from 2022, according to Medical Economics' 95th Physician Report released Aug. 14.

The average amount of secondary income varied. Internal medicine specialists reported the highest secondary income at $60,000 while physicians specializing in OB-GYN reported the lowest at $38,000.

Medical Economics collected data from its physician audience on salaries, productivity, malpractice rates and the state of the profession. Data covered 2023, and were collected from physicians who responded to email invitations during the half of 2024.
