In 2016, Massachusetts had the highest percentage of female physicians, in comparison to Utah, which had the lowest percentage of female physicians, according to data from the Association of American Medical Colleges.
The "2017 State Physician Workforce Data Report" analyzes data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the American Medical Association Masterfile to examine current physician supply, medical school enrollment and physician retention.
In the report, AAMC data breaks down the percentage of physicians in each state by gender.
Here are 10 states with the highest percentage of female physicians.
1. Massachusetts (41.3 percent)
2. Vermont (40.2 percent)
3. Rhode Island (39.8 percent)
4. Maryland (39.7 percent)
5. Oregon (38 percent)
6. New York (37.9 percent)
7. Illinois (37.7 percent)
8. Delaware (37.5 percent)
9. New Mexico (37.4 percent)
9. Colorado (37.4 percent)
Here are 10 states with the lowest percentage of female physicians.
1. Utah (23.8 percent)
2. Idaho (25.1 percent)
3. Wyoming (25.4 percent)
4. Mississippi (26 percent)
5. Arkansas (27 percent)
6. Alabama (27.2 percent)
7. Nevada (27.9 percent)
8. West Virginia (28.9 percent)
9. Oklahoma (29 percent)
10. Tennessee (29.3 percent)
In total 34.6 percent of active physicians in the U.S. were female in 2016.
