Miami's Jackson Health System announced that it would cut 240 positions, according to a Miami Herald report.
The 240 job cuts include 170 layoffs and elimination of 70 vacant positions. According to the report, a majority of the layoffs affect non-clinical employees.
The news of the job cuts comes shortly after the health system ordered nearly 11,000 employees making between $25,000-$200,000 to take two weeks of unpaid leave from now through Sept. 30, 2012. Employees who make less than $25,000 and more than $200,000 are also required to take five furlough days and 11 furlough days, respectively.
CEO Carlos Migoya told the health system's board that these moves are necessary in light of the organization's precarious financial situation. According to the report, the system lost nearly $10 million in October alone.
