Wyoming hospital cuts workforce by nearly 5%: 4 things to know

Mountain View Regional Hospital in Casper, Wyo., laid off 15 employees Monday, representing nearly 5 percent of the organization's workforce, reports Casper Star-Tribune.

Here are four things to know about the layoffs.

1. The hospital's co-CEO, Tom Kopitnik, MD, told the Casper Star-Tribune the layoffs represent the largest reduction in staff the surgical specialty hospital has had since opening in July 2008.

2. In discussing the layoffs, Dr. Kopitnik, a neurosurgeon, cited a decline in surgeries at Mountain View. He said in the article that many patients are delaying procedures because of concerns about the cost of their deductibles, or they're concerned about missing work while in recovery. And although the hospital has tried to move employees to departments where there is a greater need for employees, it hasn't always been able to, he said.

3. In addition to the layoffs, some positions at Mountain View were left vacant due to attrition and weren't filled.

4. The hospital may have laid off 15 employees, but it is expanding and hiring in other areas — including ears, nose and throat; allergy; audiology; and interventional pain management, according to the article.
