Winners and losers of NH primary: 5 things to know

The votes from Tuesday's New Hampshire primary are in and we are starting to see their impact.

Here are five things to know about the results.

1. Businessman Donald Trump and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) won the Republican vote and the Democratic vote, respectively. This doesn't come as a big surprise, however. The state has a significant independent population and both candidates had solid leads in the polls going into the vote.

2. Two more Republican candidates are out. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, who earned sixth and seventh place spots respectively, both announced plans to suspend their campaigns, according to The New York Times.

3. Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who leads polls for the Democratic race nationwide, had a huge margin of loss. She came in with 38 percent of the vote, trailing Sen. Sanders by more than 22 percent, according to The New York Times. Though she was expected to lose, this margin was crucial for her campaign to show she is not losing steam after a narrow win in Iowa.

4. In second place for Republicans was Ohio Gov. John Kasich, with 15.8 percent of the vote, and behind him was Texas Sen. Ted Cruz. Gov. Kasich is bracing for the negative commentary after his second place win, according to The New York Times, especially after Sen. Cruz took some serious profanity this week from Trump supporters. However, Mr. Trump has indicated he may lighten up on the attacks as the race approaches nomination time, The New York Times reported.

5. South Carolina is next. The candidates go to South Carolina for the next primary, which takes place on Feb. 20 for Republicans and Feb. 27 for Democrats.
