Healthcare needs thoughtful disruption — and not just for the sake of doing something new, Erik Wexler, Providence's incoming CEO, wrote on LinkedIn.
The Aug. 15 post was in reference to Mark Cuban's comments about shaking up the industry. Mark Cuban Cost Plus Drugs Co. will publish its contracts, the entrepreneur said on "The Daily Show" on Aug. 12.
Mr. Wexler, who currently is COO of the Renton, Wash.-based system, said Mr. Cuban's drug pricing critique is understandable. Mr. Wexler added that disruption is often misunderstood, saying that it should be done "in alignment with patients, providers and payers."
Implementing programs that address health inequity is one way Providence has welcomed thoughtful disruption, he said.
"When it comes to disruption, we must ask whether it will improve healthcare outcomes and access for everyone, or if it only benefits special interests that conflict with doing the best for those who need care," Mr. Wexler wrote.
