Presidential candidate Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., introduced a three-part plan to reduce gun violence on Aug. 10, and as part of that, committed to reducing gun-related deaths by 80 percent.
This goal is pegged to 2017, a year in which Ms. Warren said 40,000 people were killed by guns in the U.S.
Her plan is three-fold:
- Ms. Warren pledged to pass an executive order to require background checks, report multiple gun purchases and increase the minimum age to buy guns to 18 across all states, among other reforms.
- She wants to also back this directive up with plans to send a comprehensive package of legislation to Congress, which she committed to signing into law in the first 100 days in office. Her vision for this legislation includes establishing a federal licensing system, increasing taxes on gun manufacturers and passing a new ban on assault weapons.
- Ms. Warren also committed to passing anti-corruption reforms to limit the power of lobbies like the National Rifle Association.
