Deerfield, Ill.-based Walgreens Boots Alliance made a few changes within its senior management, as it moves to what it calls "the next phase of evolution."
The leadership shuffle could potentially be part of a succession plan, according to a Forbes analysis.
The following moves were made:
- Simon Roberts, executive vice president of Walgreens Boots Alliance and president of Boots, is leaving the company next month.
- Elizabeth Fagan, who serves as senior vice president of MD International Retail, will step into the role of senior vice president and managing director of Boots.
- Additionally, Alex Gourlay, EVP of Walgreens Boots Alliance and president of Walgreens, and Ornella Barra, EVP of Walgreens Boots Alliance and president and CEO of global wholesale and international retail, have both been named co-COOs.
- This move adds another title — chief commercial officer — to the resume of Ken Murphy, EVP of Walgreens Boots Alliance and president of global brands, who will report to Ms. Barra.
- Kathleen Wilson-Thompson, EVP and global chief human resources officer, will also report to Ms. Barra.
"As we continue to work together to find simpler and more effective ways to manage our company, I believe this is the right structure at the right time," Jim Skinner, Walgreens Boots Alliance executive chairman, said in a statement. "The changes announced today will allow us to further enhance operating performance, while developing our company for the longer term. I want to congratulate Ornella and Alex on their extended responsibilities. We are very fortunate to have these two world-class corporate executives working together in a senior management team that is very well positioned to guide our businesses across the world through the changing landscape of healthcare."
