UC Davis Opens $32M Emergency Department

UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, Calif., has opened a $32 million, 40,000-square-foot expanded emergency department, according to a UC Davis news release.

The Michael W. Chapman Emergency and Trauma Center's opening moves the department from its decades-long former location. The 68-bed facility houses the only level 1 pediatric and adult trauma center in Northern California.

"This highly sophisticated facility enables UC Davis to respond to the growing, critical health needs of the people of Northern California," Ann Madden Rice, CEO of UC Davis Medical Center, said in the release.

The facility is part of the recently completed Surgery and Emergency Services Pavilion, which includes new operating rooms and recovery areas for cardiovascular, neurological and burn surgery patients, among others. The placement of the ED and the surgery facilities together is expected to help transfer ED patients to surgery up to 75 percent faster, according to the release

UC Davis treats more than 55,000 ED patients each year.
