Chris Van Gorder, president and CEO of San Diego-based Scripps Health, sent a memo to his staff March 26 recognizing women leaders, including those who laid the groundwork for the health system.
The memo, obtained by Becker's Hospital Review, was addressed to Scripps staff and physicians. It honored several of the hospital's female leaders, including founders Ellen Browning Scripps and Mother Mary Michael Cummings.
In his memo, Mr. Gorder wrote: "Women leaders excel in every part of Scripps, from the supervisory level to our outstanding physicians to the Scripps Health Board of Trustees. While other companies struggle to fill leadership roles with women, Scripps women leaders represent the majority of our 15,000 employees, as well as the thousands of women in San Diego who are the primary healthcare decision-makers for their families."
Mr. Gorder said six of Scripps' 15 board members are women, with five of them chairing board committees and one being the board chair.
"From day one, Scripps has welcomed women to be part of our mission and our leadership. Whether they lead from the boardroom, a hospital office or a patient care unit, women are a vitally important part of our past and our present. I think Miss Ellen and Mother Mary Michael would like that."
