Senators Question Value of CMS' $10B Innovation Center; Request Investigation

Three Republican senators have expressed concern that The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation and its $10 billion budget is a waste of money, according to a report from The Hill.

Sens. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) and Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) wrote a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius asking for information about several CMMI demonstration programs that pay physicians based on performance. The senators want to know how much HHS has spent on those initiatives, such as bundled payments and efforts to help systems form ACOs.

The senators requested information on whether those programs have yet produced savings and how HHS is measuring their success or failure. Furthermore, Sens. Hatch, Enzi and Coburn requested an investigation of CMMI from the Government Accountability Office. They want to know how CMMI has been implemented and how it interacts with other offices.
