Scripps Health and Sharp Healthcare, both based in San Diego, spent a combined $674 million in community benefits last year, according to a San Diego Union-Tribune report.
Scripps Health itself spent $338 million, with approximately 85 percent of that going toward uncompensated healthcare services. The remaining spending on community benefits was committed to community health services, such as screenings and education programs, and training and research programs.
Sharp Healthcare spent nearly $335.9 million, with $325.3 million of that going toward uncompensated care or under-reimbursement from Medicare and Medi-Cal. Other spending on community benefits included services for seniors, the homeless and veterans; education programs and screening clinics.
