Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., on March 7 unveiled a reproductive healthcare plan that would broaden access to birth control and protect abortion rights.
The plan builds on the candidate's single-payer "Medicare for All" platform. Under Mr. Sanders' plan, birth control would be fully covered by Medicare for All and available over the counter. He vowed to repeal the Hyde Amendment, which prohibits using federal funds for abortion services, and to codify Roe v. Wade as a legislative statute.
The plan also includes funding increases for labor and delivery services to address access issues in both rural and urban areas.
Mr. Sanders also vowed to address racial disparities in maternity care. He plans to accomplish this by helping healthcare organizations provide more "culturally competent care," among other initiatives.
