New Brunswick, N.J.-based Saint Peter's University Hospital eliminated 108 positions, including 66 full-time jobs, to "remain competitive," according to NJ.com.
The layoffs, which occurred this week, targeted employees across the organization, including a few management positions. In addition to the full-time layoffs, the hospital cut 42 other positions. Hospital officials confirmed some of the laid-off workers would be offered part-time positions or different full-time opportunities.
The job cuts are needed "to remain competitive in an extremely challenging and complex environment," Leslie Hirsch, Saint Peter's University Hospital's interim CEO and president, told NJ.com.
The hospital sits in a highly competitive market, with New Brunswick-based Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital — the flagship facility of the largest health system in the state — just across town.
"We understand the impact that this announcement has on our Saint Peter's community," Ms. Hirsch added, according to NJ.com "We must continue to grow and manage cost in the context of the changing dynamics of the industry, and at the same time, plan for Saint Peter's future. Most importantly, we remain steadfastly committed to our mission of providing quality patient care and access to services for our community."
