Reading (Pa.) Health System laid off 210 employees yesterday and is eliminating another 181 jobs through attrition, according to a Reading Eagle report.
Health system officials said the cuts are part of a cost-reduction plan in response to declining Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement. Reading Health COO Therese Sucher also said the layoffs stem from reduced patient volume for elective surgeries.
Ms. Sucher told the Reading Eagle "easily about 65 percent" of positions affected by the layoffs were clerical.
Six nurses and 63 administrative assistants were laid off throughout the system, but other specific numbers and positions affected were not disclosed, according to the report.
Reading Health includes 735-bed Reading Hospital. Prior to the layoffs, the system reported having approximately 7,300 employees.
