University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque has contracted a company to outsource medical transcriptionists, which will result in the layoffs of 57 employees, according to a KRQE report.
UNM Hospital has contracted Nuance Technologies, a company based in Burlington, Mass., that uses voice-recognition technology for medical transcription.
UNM transcriptionists affected by the outsourcing have an opportunity to work for Nuance, but the employees must have a 99-percent accuracy rate in transcription, according to the report.
UNM Hospital did not provide estimates on how much money would be saved by the outsourcing, according to the report.
