Changing market dynamics mean healthcare leaders must redefine their performance goals, according to Press Ganey's new 2016 Strategic Insights report, titled "Performance Redefined: As Health Care Moves from Volume to Value, the Streams of Quality are Coming Together."
"As consumerism in healthcare continues to grow, providers must organize around patients' needs to deliver greater value in order to earn and protect market share," said Patrick T. Ryan, Press Ganey's CEO. "With the convergence of various quality streams in patient care, organizations with a patient-centric culture and a focus on improving the safety, quality and experience of care will likely be in a better position to respond to market pressures and deliver new sources of value."
To help healthcare leaders achieve their new performance goals, Press Ganey suggests embracing the following six core principles.
1. Prioritize the reduction of patient suffering across the organization.
2. Commit to the goal of zero patient harm and accept no other goals.
3. Acknowledge how safety, quality and patient experience are interdependent.
4. Implement an integrated balanced scorecard for healthcare workers.
5. Transform culture and leadership to align with safety goals.
6. Improve accountability and execution.
