President Donald Trump signed a bill May 30 that will give terminally ill patients the opportunity to use experimental drugs that do not yet have FDA approval, according to The Hill.
Supporters of the bill say it will give treatment opportunities to patients who already have explored every other option.
"Thousands of terminally ill Americans will finally have hope, and the fighting chance, and I think it's going to better than a chance, that they will be cured, they will be helped, and be able to be with their families for a long time, or maybe just for a longer time," said President Trump, according to The Hill.
Most Democrats opposed the bill, saying it is dangerous for patients to take drugs that have not been cleared by the FDA.
"FDA oversight of access to experimental treatments exists for a reason — it protects patients from potential snake oil salesmen or from experimental treatments that might do more harm than good," said Rep. Frank Pallone, D-N.J.
