President Donald Trump has backed away from putting a ban on flavored e-cigarettes due to pressure from advisers and lobbyists, who warned the president of the political consequences of such a move, The New York Times reports.
President Trump vowed in September to ban flavored e-cigarettes as thousands of people began to suffer from vaping-related lung injuries and usage among teens climbed. The New York Times points to a conversation President Trump had with advisers on a Nov. 4 flight to Kentucky as the moment when he began to reverse course on the issue.
White House officials were still optimistic that a ban was forthcoming last week, according to the report. However, tweets from the president last week indicated he planned to hold more meetings on the issue rather than take action, according to the report.
