Pennsylvania hospital lays off 45 physician practice employees

St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia laid off about 45 employees and eliminated certain unfilled positions in its general pediatric practice, specialty and satellite physician offices.

The cuts, implemented Aug. 14, represent about 7 percent of the hospital's workforce in those physician practices, although that percentage is expected to be lower, as there are opportunities for other positions, said spokesperson Gabrielle Lacherza.

The workforce reduction announcement comes seven months after the hospital was acquired by American Academic Health System, an affiliate of national healthcare management company Paladin Healthcare.

Hospital officials said employees affected by the layoffs have received support during the transition process, including job opportunities.

"These changes in no way will adversely impact patient care and we will take every step necessary to support our employees in their work day-to-day," officials said in a prepared statement. "Additional changes are not expected at this time. The impacted employees were given severance or offered open positions within the American Academic Health System hospitals."
