DuBois, Pa.-based Penn Highlands Healthcare has announced plans to lay off 28 employees, reduce hours for 25 staff members and eliminate 15 jobs through attrition at Penn Highlands Elk in St. Marys, Pa.
The workforce adjustment will involve full- and part-time clinical, support and management positions and is expected to save Penn Highlands Elk approximately $2 millionannually.
The system said the move is an essential first step in a planned, system-wide restructuring intended to help stem financial losses and right-size facilities in the wake of reduced inpatient volumes and decreased revenue.
"Although we have accomplished much in the areas of enhancing and expanding the primary care and specialty medical services we offer the residents of this region, we have known for some time that we still have some difficult but necessary work to do in securing the future of our facilities," Penn Highlands Healthcare CEO Raymond A. Graeca said in a news release.
