The North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation has denied certificate of need requests for two proposed 65-bed hospitals — by FirstHealth of the Carolinas in Pinehurst, N.C., and Cape Fear Valley Health System in Fayetteville, N.C., according to a report by The Pilot.
Both systems have been embroiled in a years-long battle to build a new hospital in Hoke County. Previously, Cape Fear was granted a CON to build a 41-bed hospital, while First Health received approval for an 8-bed facility. The systems appealed that decision, arguing granting both applications would duplicate services. They both then filed CON requests for a 65-bed facility.
