A planned merger between Indiana University Health and Kokomo, Ind.-based Howard Regional Health System has collapsed, according to an Indianapolis Business Journal report.
HRHS CEO Jim Alender cited the uncertainty of healthcare reform as the reason to halt discussions with IU Health. The HRHS board approved the merger in May, but Mr. Alender said the hospital system has since changed its strategic direction.
"We know change is coming, but we do not know the form of these changes given the ongoing debates in Washington and the litigation over healthcare reform," Mr. Alender said, according to the report.
IU Health CEO Dan Evans said the two organizations will continue to work in partnership, according to the report.
