Mercy Medical Center in Massachusetts to lay off employees, close hearing center

Mercy Medical Center in Springfield, Mass., told staff it will eliminate jobs and end some services, The Republican reported.

Mark Fulco, the hospital's president, notified staff of the changes in a letter sent Oct. 24. He said the changes were necessary amid a challenging economy and financial pressures in healthcare, according to the report.

"The decision to make these changes has been difficult and the subject of a thorough discernment process. We deeply regret that the reduction of positions is necessary," Mr. Fulco wrote. "We are grateful to all of our colleagues who provide a healing touch as a reflection of their commitment to Mercy's mission and values."

The letter did not reveal the number of layoffs. But hospital spokesperson Mary Orr told The Republican Mercy Medical Center will close Mercy Hearing Center, located in Springfield and Agawam, Mass. She said some employees at the hospital will also be affected by the reorganization, which is slated to take effect at the end of the year. Direct caregivers will not be affected.

Mr. Fulco said the hospital will try to place employees in other roles, as well as use job-training programs to help employeesfind new positions at Mercy.
