U.S. News & World Report named 22 hospitals to its 2023-24 Best Regional Hospitals Honor Roll Aug. 1.
Hospitals in major metropolitan areas and states are ranked based on performance in various specialty areas. The Honor Roll represents the 22 hospitals that achieved the highest scores across 21 condition and procedure areas, according to U.S. News.
Below, Becker's features the chief medical officers from the 2023-24 Honor Roll hospitals.

The University of California San Francisco Medical Center made the Honor Roll, but its CMO recently vacated the position in July.
Cleveland Clinic was named to the Honor Roll but former CMO Robert Wyllie, MD, former chief of medical operations, has moved on to a leadership position at Cleveland Clinic Children's Hospital. His successor has not yet been named.
Katie Henderson, MD — Barnes-Jewish Hospital (St. Louis)
Dr. Henderson has been CMO at Barnes-Jewish since 2008; in 2016, she also assumed the position of executive director of clinical outcomes and quality. She oversees patient safety and quality, graduate medical education, clinical effectiveness and the pharmacy, among fulfilling several other responsibilities. Dr. Henderson is also an attending physician in the Barnes-Jewish Primary Care Medicine Clinic in St. Louis.
Charles Morris, MD — Brigham and Women's Hospital (Boston)
Dr. Morris assumed the role of deputy CMO in January 2021, after having served as associate CMO for 19 years. During his tenure at Brigham and Women's, he has held roles in the department of medicine's division of general medicine primary care. Dr. Morris has also practiced primary care at the hospital and served as the medical director for Brigham Circle Medical Associates.
Richard Riggs, MD — Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (Los Angeles)
Dr. Riggs assumed the role of senior vice president of medical affairs and CMO in 2019. Previously, he held the position of chief medical information officer since 2015 and served as chair of physical medicine and rehabilitation. Throughout his 25 years as a leader at Cedars-Sinai, Dr. Riggs has gained a reputation for collaboration and leading key initiatives.
Michael Posencheg, MD — Hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania-Penn Presbyterian (Philadelphia)
Dr. Posencheg joined Penn Presbyterian Medical Center as the CMO in 2020. He is also an attending neonatologist at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.
Schlomit Schaal, MD — Houston Methodist Hospital
Dr. Schall was named executive vice president and chief physician executive in April. She is the former president of UMass Memorial Medical Group.
Peter Hill, MD — Johns Hopkins Hospital (Baltimore)
Dr. Hill has served as CMO of Johns Hopkins Hospital and senior vice president for medical affairs of Johns Hopkins Health System since 2017. He came to Johns Hopkins in 2005 as clinical director and has served as vice chair for clinical affairs and director of observation services before assuming his current role.
O'Neil Britton, MD —Massachusetts General Hospital (Boston)
Dr. Britton has been the CMO and senior vice president at Mass General since 2016. In his role, he provides administrative oversight for various departments including pathology, radiology, pharmacy and the executive committee on teaching and education. Dr Britton is a practicing physician at MGH and mentors students in his role as hospitalist.
Amy Williams, MD — Mayo Clinic (Rochester, Minn.)
Dr. Williams was named the executive dean of practice — the hospital's CMO equivalent — in 2019. An internist and nephrologist, she has held many leadership positions since joining the Mayo Clinic in 1990. In addition to maintaining clinical duties, Dr. Williams is the medical director of the Eisenberg Dialysis Unit and chair of the department of medicine at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.
Shirish Huprikar, MD — Mount Sinai Hospital (New York City)
Dr. Huprikar serves as chief medical officer at Mount Sinai Hospital as well as director of the Transplant Infectious Diseases program and associate director of the Infectious Diseases Fellowship program. Dr. Huprikar is a practicing physician who cares for patients with or at-risk of AIDS/HIV.
Deepa Kumaraiah, MD — NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell (New York City)
Dr. Kumaraiah has served as the senior vice president and CMO since 2022. Prior to this role, she was the senior vice president of service line integration and chief physician of the NewYork-Presbyterian Medical Groups. Dr. Kumaraiah joined NYP in 2012.
Jill Kalman, MD — North Shore University Hospital at Northwell Health (Manhasset, N.Y.)
Dr. Kalman joined Northwell Health in 2014 as an associate medical director and was later promoted to chief medical officer and physician in chief in 2021. As a leader at Northwell's Lenox Hill Hospital, she helped the facility achieve Magnet status in 2020.
Saadia Sherwani, MD — Northwestern Memorial Hospital (Chicago)
Dr. Sherwani became the hospital's chief medical officer in 2022. She is board certified in anesthesiology and adult echocardiography and perioperative echocardiography. Dr. Sherwani is also an associate professor at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine.
Andrew Brotman, MD — NYU Langone Hospitals (New York City)
Dr. Brotman, NYU Langone's chief clinical officer, has been with the health system since 1999. He specializes in psychiatry and also teaches as professor in the department of this specialty at NYU.
Paul Casey, MD — Rush University Medical Center (Chicago)
Dr. Casey first became the chief medical officer at Rush University Medical Center in 2019. He has continued to be a practicing physician in his specialty area of emergency medicine. Dr. Casey is also a professor of medicine at Rush University.
Niraj Sehgal, MD — Stanford Health Care - Stanford (Calif.) Hospital
Dr. Sehgal has been the acting chief medical officer for Stanford Health Care since 2020. Prior to leading Stanford Health in this capacity, he had a 16-year career with the UCSF Health system. Dr. Sehgal is also a professor and the senior associate dean for clinical affairs at Stanford's School of Medicine.
Parag Agnihotri, MD — UC San Diego Health - La Jolla and Hillcrest Hospitals
Dr. Agnihotri is the chief medical officer of population health services at UC San Diego Health. He joined the health system in 2019 and specializes in geriatric care. Dr. Agnihotri was a 2019 recipient of the Multi-Community Innovative Leadership Award from the Right Care Initiative, which honors California healthcare professionals at the helm of innovative solutions in the field.
Philip Levin, MD — UCLA Medical Center (Los Angeles)
Dr. Levin became the chief medical officer of Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center in 2015. He specializes in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine — of which he is also a professor of at the university. He has spent his medical career with UCLA Health and first joined the system in 2000 as a professor and went on to lead as the chief of anesthesia services in 2002, the medical director of perioperative services in 2003 and the vice-chief of staff in 2010.
Jeffrey Desmond, MD — University of Michigan Health - Ann Arbor
Dr. Desmond is an emergency medicine specialist. He was appointed to lead the University of Michigan Health system as its chief medical officer in 2015, but first joined the system in 1993. Throughout his career, in addition to being a clinical associate professor for many years, he has also served in several capacities including as the service chief and the associate chair for clinical operations.
Craig Glazer, MD — UT Southwestern Medical Center (Dallas)
Dr. Glazer has been the chief medical officer for UT Southwestern Medical Center since 2020. He specializes in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Dr. Glazer is also a professor in UT Southwestern Medical Center's Department of Internal Medicine.
Rick Wright, MD — Vanderbilt University Medical Center (Nashville, Tenn.)
Dr. Wright was appointed as the chief medical officer of Vanderbilt University Medical Center in 2023. The role took effect July 1. Previously, he was the chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery within the system.
