Physicians at Medical Park Hospital in Hope, Ark., are asking lawmakers to help save the hospital from bankruptcy or closure, according to an Arkansas Times report.
The hospital is owned by James A. Cheek, who was convicted in February for failure to pay $1.8 million in payroll taxes at another hospital he owned with Herschel Breig in Lubbock, Texas. In a letter to Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe and several other state officials, the physicians explained that employees are unable to cash checks and health insurance premiums and suppliers are not being paid, and the hospital owes nearly $3 million in back taxes.
Fearful of service closures and layoffs, the physicians are asking lawmakers to step in to help the facility, which is the only hospital for residents along the Interstate 30 corridor.
