Medicaid's new director: 3 things to know

The Trump administration chose Maine's former health commissioner to run Medicaid for the nation, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Here are three things to know:

1. Mary Mayhew, who was also a Republican candidate in Maine's gubernatorial race, began her position as deputy administrator and director of Medicaid and the Children's Health Insurance Program Oct. 15. Politico reporter Dan Diamond was among the first to report the news.

2. Ms. Mayhew previously served as Maine's Department of Health and Human Services' commissioner for seven years under Republican Gov. Paul LePage.

3. She has long been an opponent of Medicaid expansion under the ACA. While Maine voters approved Medicaid expansion through a November 2017 referendum, the policy has not been funded and is being legally challenged by Mr. LePage.
