Pikeville (Ky.) Medical Center has cut 130 positions, including 100 layoffs, as it aims for financial improvement, according to a Williamson Daily News report.
The cuts primarily affect support positions, Donovan Blackburn, the medical center's CEO, told media. One hundred employees were laid off, and another 30 positions — which were vacant from people who were fired, who retired or who quit — were cut.
The medical center attributed the cuts to its financial struggles. Mr. Blackburn told media 2016 was the hospital's best financial year, while 2017 was its worst.
The medical center hired about 600 people to staff an 11-story clinic and parking garage it finished in 2015, reports the Williamson Daily News. According to Mr. Blackburn, only 130 of those staffers will now remain.
The CEO said the medical center still plans to expand its heart and vascular institute.
The Williamson Daily News could not immediately reach Mr. Blackburn or the hospital's COO for more comments.
