Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif., a 2020 presidential candidate, introduced a bill July 22 to address the safety and affordability of drinking water.
The plan, called the "Water Justice Act," would earmark $50 billion for communities and schools to test for contaminants and fix infrastructure issues related to contaminated drinking water. It would also invest $170 billion into existing programs under the Safe Drinking Water Act and Clean Water Act.
Other provisions of the law are directed at making water bills more affordable in low-income communities as well as making the country's water supply more sustainable.
Reps. Dan Kildee, D-Mich., and Brenda Lawrence, D-Mich., plan to introduce the bill's counterpart in the House.
