Jackson Health System Reaches Agreements With Unions, Resolves Lawsuit

Miami-based Jackson Health System has reached several agreements with its unions, settling issues of outsourcing staff and a federal lawsuit, according to a Miami Herald report.

The main agreement was a decision by Jackson management to halt efforts to outsource physicians and other staff members at Jackson Memorial's adult emergency department and the system's rape treatment center. Jackson management still reserves the right to consider outsourcing for three of the system's other EDs, but even if those departments are outsourced, the employees will be able to remain Jackson employees, according to the report.

The other major tenet of the agreement pertains to Jackson's central business office operations. Jackson management decided to no longer consider outsourcing those employees, which would have resulted in job loss for roughly 100 members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 1363.

Jackson also settled a lawsuit filed by the Service Employees International Union over the system's elimination of 1,100 positions last spring. Jackson management and union negotiators agreed to complex scheduling changes that will reduce scheduled overtime and bring some part-time workers back to full-time status, according to the report.
