It's National Hospital Week: 6 things to know

National Hospital Week — which aims to recognize and celebrate hospitals, health systems and the people who work at them — began May 12 and ends May 18.

Six things to know:

1. The weeklong event has roots dating  to 1921, when National Hospital Day was established on Florence Nightingale's birthday. Ms. Nightingale is considered the founder of modern nursing.

2. National Hospital Day expanded to a weeklong event in 1953.

3. The American Hospital Association sponsors National Hospital Week, which still occurs the week (Sunday-Saturday) of Ms. Nightingale’s birthday, May 12.

4. The AHA is conducting a social media campaign to raise awareness about hospitals and health systems and help them celebrate National Hospital Week.

5. As part of the social media campaign, the AHA is encouraging organizations to share photos and videos on social media spotlighting their importance using #MyHospital and #HospitalWeek hashtags.

6. The AHA is also hosting a Twitter chat at 11 a.m. May 16 to celebrate the week.
