UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown (Iowa), a nonprofit community healthcare provider, plans to eliminate jobs and close its intensive care unit amid financial problems, according to a Des Moines Register report.
The ICU and the bistro on the south campus will close Nov. 30, affecting 15 workers, the report stated. UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown also will eliminate 10 full and part-time positions not related to direct patient care so it can put resources into emergency, primary care, urgent care, obstetrics services and outpatient surgeries.
Hospital officials said affected employees may be able to find other jobs within the West Des Moines, Iowa-based UnityPoint Health system.
They attributed the move to financial struggles, including low patient volume in the ICU and nonprofitability of the bistro.
Overall, the healthcare provider is experiencing a $7 million budget deficit, Laura Rainey, regional marketing director for UnityPoint Health, told the Des Moines Register.
UnityPoint Health-Marshalltown operates a 49-bed, acute care hospital, four primary care medical clinics and a medical park. It employs 450 people.
