Intermountain CEO gives report to community: 4 takeaways

Marc Harrison, MD, president and CEO of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, delivered a report Oct. 26 to local community and healthcare leaders outlining initiatives for the 23-hospital system.

Four takeaways:

1. Intermountain will invest $1.2 billion in capital improvements over the next five years. Projects include the system's 300,000-square-foot Layton (Utah) Hospital, which opened this month, as well as the $150 million Spanish Fork (Utah) Hospital that is slated to open in 2020. A recently completed project includes expanded hospital services in St. George, Utah, as well as new clinics in Layton, Lehi and Sandy, Utah.

2. Intermountain in September announced it would join forces with six other health systems to launch a nonprofit generic drug company, Civica Rx, to address drug shortages and rising drug prices.

3. Intermountain offers more than 40 telehealth services in seven states, according to Dr. Harrison. About 520,000 patients have used the services since 2013.

4. In June, Intermountain announced it is devoting $12 million in the Utah Alliance for the Determinants of Health initiative in Ogden and St. George, Utah, which aims to address social determinants of health such as access to transportation.
