Hospital groups file friend-of-the-court brief in lawsuit against Trump's termination of cost-sharing subsidies

The American Hospital Association, Federation of American Hospitals, Catholic Health Association of the United States and Association of American Medical Colleges filed a brief in the 18-state lawsuit that seeks to force President Donald Trump to fund cost-sharing subsidies.

State of California, et al., v. Donald J. Trump, et al. was filed by the attorneys general of 18 states and the District of Columbia after President Trump announced Oct. 12 he would end cost-sharing subsidies to insurers. The groups argue in their amicus curiae brief that these subsidies are essential for providing affordable insurance coverage

"All of this suggests that the cost-sharing subsidies provided for under the Act should continue to be made," the brief states. "Congress meant for the Act to create exchanges where lower-income patients could purchase affordable insurance that they could actually use. Without the subsidy payments, government expenditures under the Act will increase, which would be in tension with the Act’s goals."
