U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, D-Fla., wants HHS Secretary Alex Azar to resign over immigration policies implemented under his watch.
Ms. Mucarsel-Powell pointed to the Trump administration's "Remain in Mexico" policies, which have separated children from families and diverted funds to build a wall at the U.S. border with Mexico. She called out the Homestead child detention center in Florida, where she says several children have died and services such as education, exercise and legal aid have been cut.
"By enforcing these disastrous policies, the [HHS] under the leadership of Secretary Alex M. Azar has proved it cannot be a trusted caretaker for children and minors in its custody. For these reasons, Secretary Azar must resign," Ms. Mucarsel-Powell said in a press release June 7.
