Three Democratic senators sent a letter to HHS Secretary Alex Azar on Oct. 23 seeking information on the agency's progress in recouping at least $341,000 of money improperly spent by former Secretary Tom Price, MD.
Dr. Price resigned from the role in 2017 after facing criticism for using taxpayer funds for charter flights. A June 2018 audit by the HHS Office of Inspector General concluded at least $341,000 of improperly used federal funds should be recouped, the letter notes. This money has not been recouped over a year later, according to the OIG.
The senators called on Mr. Azar to report on how much of the recommended funds has been recouped from Dr. Price. The letter was sent by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, Washington Sen. Patty Murray and Oregon Sen. Ron Wyden.
