Hawaii Health Systems Corp., the state's public hospital system, will lay off 30 employees at healthcare facilities on the island of Kauai, according to The Garden Island.
Here are four things to know about the layoffs.
1. The Kauai region layoffs involve 30 employees — 20 from Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital and West Kauai Clinics in Waimea, and 10 from Mahelona Memorial Hospital in Kapaa, Missy Keyes-Saiki, HHSC Kauai Region spokeswoman, told The Garden Island. All together, the West Kauai Medical Center — which includes the Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, a hospital outpatient clinic in Port Allen, a clinic in Kalaheo and a new clinic scheduled to open in Poipu — employs 276 people, according to HHSC. The Mahelona Hospital, including its 24-hour emergency services, employs about 145 people.
2. Full-time, part-time and temporary positions are affected.
3. The workforce reduction comes amid financial problems. Kauai faced a roughly $3 million shortfall in fiscal year 2016 after the Hawaii Legislature didn't appropriate all the requested funds, according to the report. It was a similar situation for the HHSC's Oahu region, which earlier this month announced plans to cut 64 positions at Leahi Hospital and Maluhia in Honolulu as it faces an estimated $3.7 million deficit in FY 2016.
4. Affected employees were notified of their pending layoffs Friday. Formal notifications will be made Aug. 1.
