Medford, Mass.-based Hallmark Health is laying off 57 employees, or about 2 percent of the company's workforce, this week, according to Wicked Local Reading.
Hallmark Health CEO Alan Macdonald wrote in an email to his employees that the layoffs were necessary to achieve the company's goal of reducing operating costs by $16 million in fiscal year 2017, according to the article.
While the systemwide layoffs began in September, the majority will occur this week. Officials also said some job cuts will occur in January 2017, according to the article.
"Without any question, this is a very difficult decision for Hallmark Health," Mr. Macdonald said in the email. "Every effort has been made to limit the number of layoffs as much as possible. We value so much the work and contribution by each and every employee. The number of affected positions has been kept at a minimum by not filling certain vacancies, by reducing hours where possible and by reviewing more than 400 ideas by managers and directors to improve Hallmark Health’s operations. Many of those ideas will be implemented in the months ahead."
