UPMC's former head of learning and development for physician services, Joe Mull, MEd, published a book this month to address what he sees as a roadblock to quality patient care: a disengaged healthcare workforce, according to the Pittsburgh Business Times.
In Mr. Mull's book, "Cure for the Common Leader: What Physicians & Managers Must Do to Engage & Inspire," he digests research on leadership, employee engagement and motivation into seven behavioral changes physicians and managers can take to better motivate and engage their workforce.
In an excerpt from the book on Mr. Mull's blog he writes, "Employees know that the manager often has to answer to or take orders from the physicians. Physicians set the tone for what happens at a site, how people interact and the overall culture of the environment. This is why BOTH physicians AND managers must work to cultivate engagement."
He also noted a statement from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education that there is "a significant void in the training and education of today's young physician leaders."
Mr. Mull's book offers strategies to bridge the healthcare leadership gap.
