Former Anthem CEO Joseph Swedish starts private equity firm

Joseph Swedish started a private equity firm after stepping down as CEO of Anthem in 2017.

Mr. Swedish, who served more than four years at the helm of Anthem, is the co-founder of Concord Health Partners. The firm invests in companies "that have the potential to enhance the value of healthcare through technology and solutions that lower costs, improve quality and/or expand access to care," according to its website.

After stepping down as CEO of Anthem, Mr. Swedish stayed on as an executive chairman of the board until May 2018. In addition to focusing on private equity investments, Mr. Swedish is still advising Anthem, he told Axios at the J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference in San Francisco this week. He'll serve as one of the insurer's senior advisers through May 2020.

As CEO of Anthem, Mr. Swedish orchestrated the company's $54 billion merger proposal to Cigna in 2015. The deal was ultimately called off due to regulatory challenges.
