The Kentucky Hospital Association openly acknowledged its pay-to-play political strategy in an email sent to member hospitals Sept. 27, according to the Lexington Herald Leader.
The association recommended members donate at least $250 to Andy Beshear, the Democratic contender for governor of Kentucky, to even out financial support across parties. Currently, the association and its members have raised $30,000 for Republican Gov. Matt Bevin, but only $4,500 for Mr. Beshear, according to the report.
"We cannot predict the outcome of the election but we can assure [sic] access to the winner with a strong show of support for each candidate," wrote Bud Warman, vice president of member engagement, in the email obtained by the Lexington Herald Leader.
Both campaigns told the Lexington Herald Leader their candidates have strong ethics when asked if donations ensured access.
