Daughters of Charity to leave Lourdes Hospital

The Daughters of Charity plan to leave Birmingham, N.Y.-based Lourdes Hospital in the spring of 2017, according to WBNG.com.

The nuns have been with the hospital since the 1920s. In their time with Lourdes, they've helped it develop an intensive care unit, a recovery room, home hospice care and a regional cancer center.

A recent decrease in their numbers has prompted the Daughters of Charity to leave. The group has yet to announce where they'll go.

Lourdes Hospital CEO Kathy Connerton said the Daughters have contributed to Catholic healthcare, supported parish life and will be greatly missed.

"It has taught us a lot about our roots and where we came from, what our expectations are as a Catholic Healthcare institution and to help ready us to make decisions on behalf of them as they are no longer here in our community," she said, according to the report.
