Cynthia Nixon, a Democratic candidate for governor of New York, endorses a proposal for a single-payer healthcare system in the state, according to The Hill.
Ms. Nixon is running as a liberal alternative to incumbent Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has tentatively endorsed the idea of a universal healthcare system if it receives federal support.
Ms. Nixon has been more explicit in her support of the proposal.
"Healthcare should be a human right, not a privilege for those who can afford it," said Ms. Nixon, according to The Hill. "When I'm governor, we'll pass the New York Health Act and create a single-payer, Medicare-for-all-system that covers every New Yorker."
