Cone Health CEO Emeritus Dennis Barry dies at 80

Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health is mourning the loss of former president and CEO Dennis Barry, who died Nov. 21 at age 80, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.

"Much of what Cone Health means to our region today is the direct result of Dennis' tremendous vision for our health system and our community," Cone Health CEO Terry Akin said in a press release.

In 25 years of leadership at Cone Health, Mr. Barry grew the health system and made investments big and small. He is remembered by the health system for buying a failing behavioral health facility because "behavioral health services were too important for the community to lose," according to the press release.

In addition to serving as president and CEO of Cone Health, Mr. Barry also served as chairman of the American Hospital Association, chairman of the North Carolina Healthcare Association and a board member of The Joint Commission.

"Dennis understood both the big picture and the finite detail, applying both to all he did. He mentored and influenced countless leaders, who today work for Cone Health and health systems around the nation. Our former CEO Tim Rice and I were fortunate to have Dennis' friendship, expertise and wise counsel," Mr. Akin said.
