Competitors Question Wisconsin-Based Mercy Health's Plans to Build Hospital in Chicago Suburb

In a public hearing on Janesville, Wis.-based Mercy Health System's plans to build a 128-bed hospital in Crystal Lake, Ill., representatives from competing hospitals questioned its plans for a new facility, according to a Northwest Herald report.

Mercy is vying with Crystal Lake-based Centegra Health System's plans to build a 128-bed hospital in nearby Huntley, Illinois. Representatives from Centegra, Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Ill., Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, Ill., and Arlington Heights, Ill.-based Alexian Brothers Health System spoke out against Mercy's plans at the hearing.

Centegra previously underwent its own public hearing, where representatives from Sherman Hospital, Advocate Good Shepherd and St. Alexius Medical Center in Hoffman Estates, Ill., question Centegra's plans.

Both Centegra and Mercy filed certificate of need applications for 128-bed hospitals in December. Opponents of the plans argued that there was no need for new hospital beds in the area.

Mercy, however, argues there is a need for increased access to hospital services, and said it has been planning the Crystal Lake facility for seven years, according to the report.

State regulators are scheduled to review both proposals on May 10.
