Two community organizations have asked for the Indiana Attorney General's office to investigate a Franciscan St. Francis Health hospital's charity care practices, according to an Indianapolis Business Journal report.
Citizens Action Coalition Education Fund and Indiana Legal Services claim Franciscan St. Francis Health — Beech Grove (Ind.) has steered patients into payment plans when they actually qualified for reduced or waived bills.
The groups say the hospital has done this to a "good number" of patients, but did not specify how many cases they have documented. A report issued by the groups states they have heard "horror stories about [the hospital's] harsh collection practices and the failure to provide information about financial assistance to those in need," according to the report.
St. Francis did not provide immediate comment in response to the report at the time of the article's publication.
