Michael J. Dowling has served as president and CEO of Great Neck, N.Y.-based North Shore-LIJ Health System since 2002.
North Shore-LIJ, New York's largest integrated healthcare system and largest private employer, includes the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and CareConnect, the system's insurance provider.
Mr. Dowling joined North Shore-LIJ in 1995, and served as the system's executive vice president and COO before becoming the chief. Previously, he served as senior vice president of Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield. He worked in the New York state government for 12 years in various roles, including seven years spent as state director of health, education and humans services and deputy secretary to the governor. He also served as commissioner of the New York State Department of Social Services.
Before that, Mr. Dowling was a professor of social policy and assistant dean at Fordham University Graduate School of Social Services and director of the Fordham campus in Westchester County in New York.
Mr. Dowling has been the recipient of many honors and awards over the course of his career, including the 2012 B’nai B’rith National Healthcare Award, the 2011 Gail L. Warden Leadership Excellence Award from the National Center for Healthcare Leadership, the National Human Relations Award from the American Jewish Committee and the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, among others.
An active participant in numerous healthcare organizations, Mr. Dowling currently serves as a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies and chairman of the North American Board of the Smurfit School of Business at University College in Dublin, Ireland. He also serves as a board member of the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and board member and fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine.
