CEO to know: Dr. Eugene Washington of Duke University Health System

Eugene Washington, MD, will be president and CEO of Raleigh, N.C.-based Duke University Health System, beginning April 1.

Dr. Washington comes to the role from his current position as CEO of UCLA Health, where he also serves as vice chancellor of life sciences and dean of UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine. He has held this role since February 2010. Dr. Washington is a professor of gynecology and health policy.

Prior to his role at UCLA, Dr. Washington was executive vice chancellor and provost for UC San Francisco. Before that, he chaired the department of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive sciences at UCSF. He also has previous experience working for the CDC in Atlanta.

Dr. Washington earned the Outstanding Service Medal from the U.S. Public Health Service and has been elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences. The AAMC and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation also recognized Dr. Washington with the David E. Rogers Award for his work improving healthcare.

Dr. Washington succeeds Victor Dzau, MD, who stepped down from the role last June to be president of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
